In 1820 James Elliott died and for the first time in the history of the community, they were faced with the necessity of burial. So, Elliott's brother-in-law Captain John I. Willson donated a piece of his property to begin the Sugar Grove Burial Ground. From the original burial ground additions have been made by purchase and donation which have increased the size of the cemetery to more than 5 acres which climb the side of the hill once called Mount Celestia but renamed "Cherry Hill" because the residents thought it simply sounded more attractive.

Over 2000 individuals are buried in Cherry Hill Cemetery, among them the founders of Sugar Grove and Warren County, merchants, tradesmen, farmers, statesmen and abolitionist workers on the Underground Railroad. The cemetery was never restricted and all races and beliefs are buried side-by-side for their final rest.

In 1977, Cherry Hill Cemetery Association instituted a $5.00 donation for each grave annually for the continued care of your ancestors.  This was "due to the rise in the cost of labor and all other things."  Your donation of $5.00 for each grave of your family (for the average family an annual donation of $30) can be mailed to
