Early Settlers

The Miles Marker

Located just to the Southwest of the intersection of Dobson Road and Stoddard (Sanders) Road in Sugar Grove Township is located the marker for the original settler to the Sugar Grove area, Robert Miles.  Miles, who was born in 1763, first settled this portion of Sugar Grove in 1797 creating a now lost community called The Miles Settlement.  In 1810 Robert was buried here and eventually joined in 1832 by his wife Catherine Watts Miles.  A son, Lt. John Miles is also listed on the marker, although a recent survey discovered that as many as 7 other unmarked graves appear to be surrounding the marker itself.  The monument is on private property and maintained by the Hill & Dale Garden Club
